It’s been noted that Dan (nee Tattoo Dan) and Yvette have been showing up more and more in the comic as of late, and often together. I’d just like to take this time to relieve anyone who may have fears that my resident girl-who-enjoys-other-girls-more-than-boys is jumping the shark and hooking up with some dumb boy.
Honestly, the reason that they’re appearing more often, with each other, is that I much prefer writing characters who don’t have real world analogues. Putting myself and Janna into comics is fun, and the people that we know appreciate them (to some degree at least), but it’s awfully hard to write ribald material, or about the hardships of singlehood, or pretty girls, or any of that jazz when two of your main characters are in a relationship with each other.
I’ve been slowly building towards it, but I might as well share with you folks that I plan on having both Janna and myself relegated to the status of “recurring character” by the end of the school year, which is early April. What that means is that I’m going to have to work on some new characters, I guess. I mean, Beth’s got her own comic going on (Boo-Niversity!, currently without a website), which precludes her from becoming a more involved member of the cast.
Maybe I could add some sort of saucy talking animal, or a kid whose parents are a pirate and a ninja, so I can touch on the subject of mixed race? Maybe a toucan with something to hide, or a girl in a wheelchair, so when I’m drawing a “talking heads” comic where characters are just shown from the waist up, I would just have to draw their head? An emo kid? Batman? A robot with emotions so human that it actually believes itself to be human, until it starts bleeding oil, and it freaks out? It could be a running gag!
I swear, my brain is like a pressure cooker for ideas. Bad ideas.
