Finally, a guest comic from someone with a real website! And look how handsome he made everyone but me! It’s the beer goggles effect, I tells ya.
If you’re a regular to the site, and you still don’t know who Evan is, he does the kick-ass strip Of Noobs And Men, which updates every Tuesday and Friday, with the possible exception of this Tuesday, since he put my site before his by making sure this was completed on time. Now that’s what I call a true internet pal! We exchanged guest strips this past Christmas as well, and looking at these two strips alone, I mean, just look. Dude’s got talent and versatility.
Go hit up his archives, and then lurk on the front page, hitting refresh, until he updates!
Last September, I made a commitment to slowly work both my own character and Janna’s out of the strip by the end of the school year, which is rapidly approaching right now.
There were two main reasons that I came to this decision: first of all, while it’s fun to put a person that you know in a comic, and they almost always get a kick out it, it leaves every other reader out in the cold, alienating them, because in a big way, they aren’t in on the joke.
The second reason, which I feel is the more important one, is that it’s easier to write for fictional characters. You can’t have a real person say something that conflicts with who they are both as a comic strip character and a real person, and you can’t put the character in a situation that the person finds distasteful, uncomfortable, and so on.
Writing for fictional characters can be a challenge, naturally, but you get to develop the characters; avatars for real people, on the other hand tend to stagnate, or be very one-note. The comic actually started, and ran for the first two years, as nothing but characters based on real people, and it was kind of really horrible for that.
So, say your goodbyes to Kyle and Janna, who I’m sure will still show up now and then, but are basically done for as cast members. To commemorate their leaving, we’re going to be featuring some amazing guest strips for this week and the next, seeing what it’s like when the artist who is a character becomes neither. Four awesome comics, then a goodbye, and then Dan and Yvette get to make some new friends!
Fingers’s comic, the Chainsawsuit-esque Ski Ninjas, has been featured on here before, but he’s never actually drawn my characters, so this was really neat to see. He’s another fellow local cartoonist, and his work can be seen on The Argus as well.
He used colour for once, just for me! Makes a guy feel special, I tell ya.
The middle two panels of this comic were generously donated by Beth Billson, who has the official designation of Premise Beach Swinger, having dated two of the main characters. Hey, when it’s a cast of four or five in total, yourself included, then two is a lot!
For those not in the know (and if you’re not in the know, then get in there, it’s like a sauna, and it’s fantastic) Beth’s a fine arts student who does a horror-themed single panel comic about my school, Lakehead University, aptly named Boo-Niversity. It looks pretty good, I dare say, and it has been known to give people a case of the jibblies when working late at the school.
You can check Boo-Niversity out on The Argus, the school paper’s website. It’s more of a local thing, but even if you don’t get the jokes, the art is worth looking at. Plus, you can see more of me on the site, in the Features and A&E sections!
