For the sake of argument, let’s say that Beth’s a real person, and that she makes this comic. I mean, it’s not like I’ve never put real people into a comic before, right?
So, Beth looked at the paper of the school we both go to (and that I’m currently employed by as a goddamned editor [Parker, where are those photos of Spider-Man? Par-keeer!!]), and noticed that there were some things missing from the comics section. Those things included the horror genre, which is certainly a mainstay of any newspaper that I care to read, and single panel comics, which tend to be funny about 1% of the time anyway, so you might as well try to make it scary.
Then she went and named it Boo-Niversity, because she doesn’t like being a respected member of society.
Tomorrow: how I actually make comics. Anybody here like text?
In the summer of 2008, I started up Fight Song. It was more of an art exercise than a real comic or anything worthwhile, but I figured it would be good filler for the days when I wasn’t updating.
The basic idea behind it was that I would listen to a song, and draw something relating to that song by the time it was over. It was an exercise in quick idea-making, and while it was easy enough to dash a week’s worth off before getting to work on the real comics, Fight Song grew to be too much of a hassle, and just not fun to make, so I nixed it after completing just short of 200 of the things. Here’s six of the better ones, and for inquiring minds, here’s links to the actual songs themselves:
Bad Astronaut – You Deserve This
Crass – Bloody Revolution
Gorillaz – 19-2000
Lagwagon – Choke
Al Hirt – Fancy Pants
They Might Be Giants – The Mesopotamians
So, there’s that.
Come back Thursday, when I go through the process of making these things!
2008 was the first year that I took part in the 24 Hour Comic Challenge, and I had a great time staying up all day and night to do it. I had originally come up with “The Goldbergs” as a spin-off comic, but it didn’t get past the idea stage, so it was nice to play with these characters at least once.
Looking back, this comic was probably the impetus for me making Dan more important in terms of the comic, as it was done at a time when I was trying desperately to move away from using real people as characters. I’d like to think he’s characterized a little more clearly now. Bet you never knew he could drum though, huh?
Be sure to come back tomorrow, when I’ll be showing off my old experimental comic/art warm-up, Fight Song! It’ll be pretty okay.
Well, my computer is taking a long nap, since its internal BIOS battery (understand that I have no idea what I’m talking about) has died, effectively putting poor little Compy in a coma. I’ve got a new one on the way, but it’s going to take some time, and I that rather than miss more updates, I would share some lost and/or behind the scenes stuff. Updates most weekdays until I’m back on my feet!
